Sketchbooks for Social Distancing

Help me give my students sketchbooks to help them continue to develop their drawing skills while social distancing at home.

My Students

Students in 6th and 7th grade art classes are excited about learning creatively; this is the first time they get to choose to take art! They have a range of artistic ability, socio-economic status, and ethnicities, but are all capable of learning and making real-world connections with the right supplies. These students are at an amazing and challenging age, where they are growing and beginning to become more serious students but can still be their goofy, unique selves.

Art class is where these students can truly shine in their individuality.

For example, during an observational drawing unit one student wanted to try drawing both of his hands at once, so he put the pencil between his toes to draw, as he coined it, a "fart" (foot art). These moments are exactly what make these kids special and why I love teaching this age group. They have not yet learned to be afraid of their creativity as so many students do as they grow up.

My Project

Many of my students do not have access to art supplies unless they are at school. They rely on the simplest of materials provided by the school in order to fully participate in art class. These sketchbooks will give my students a resource they can use to practice the drawing skills learned at school, while they are learning from home.

Sketchbooks will provide a bound space where students can continue to be creative and enhance their visual learning while they are unable to go to school.

Students will be encouraged to create a visual diary of their experiences from social distancing during COVID-19. They will pull inspiration from other artists who use visual journals, incorporate writing, and practice techniques previously learned.
