A classroom set of screen printing frames and squeegees will allow students in 6th and 7th grade art classes to simulate a working printmaking studio. With enough screens and squeegees for each child, students will learn the responsibility of screen maintenance and will be able to efficiently create layered printmaking projects. While most printmaking methods are slow and deeply rooted in art history, screen printing is far more current and applicable for 21st century students. Middle schoolers will be engaged because of the ease and creativity screen printing lends itself to, while not being discouraged by the skill and time required for other methods. Students will learn real-world skills, such as creating printed materials for actual community clients, working collaboratively on large-scale projects, and sharing a printmaking studio space. With a classroom equipped for screen printing, students will have opportunities to engage with the community by printing posters, t-shirts, and cards for various community and school projects.
