My Students

My students are faced with challenges throughout their daily lives. Our school serves many low-income families, and many students face struggles both in the classroom and outside of it.

Despite any challenges, my students WANT to succeed.

AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) assists students in learning skills that will promote their success in middle school and eventually college. Our AVID family consistently demonstrates the desire to be a role model throughout our campus, are excited to participate in community activities, and are ready to learn new and challenging material in a personalized learning community.

Despite the personal or academic challenges they may face, these students have made the choice that they want to engage in rigorous course work that will challenge and prepare them for the future, especially with regards to reaching collegiate goals.

These students are in grades 6-8 and represent a diverse student population. Our classroom is interactive, collaborative, and welcoming. These students want to set an example across the school for their abilities to succeed in rigorous coursework, organization skills, time management capability, and an openness to helping others.

My Project

My students are always working in small groups for collaborative learning structures. They love the flexible seating options we already have in class that include stools and rolling computer chairs. We've worked hard to remove all desks from our classrooms! These sets of chairs will assist us in removing more of the uncomfortable, plastic chairs, from our classroom. There are light-weight and more comfortable than the options that are provided by the school.

Flexible seating allows my students to collaborate at all times without intrusion.

My students will utilize the options of flexible learning to learn collaboration techniques that build class community. By using these seating options, in conjunction with some of the other flexible seating available class, students will be able to participate in philosophical Socratic Seminars throughout the room. Students will be able to identify the seating options which help promote them to be the most focused version of themselves. Flexible seating, in conjunction with the academic structures AVID provides, is truly setting students up to advocate for their best version of their future.

Our current classroom is a work in progress, and all my students are excited to use different seating options throughout the day to enhance their learning environment!
