My Students

I teach fifth grade in a public school in NE Minneapolis. I love teaching to a diverse population of students with mixed interests, abilities and backgrounds. Many of the children have been in classes together for years, while about a third of the students are new to the school community. This is due to our district's Comprehensive District Design (CDD), a plan which hopes to allow for a more equal opportunity for all students.

We're four months into the school year, and every day the students practice being kind to each other.

I appreciate how there has been more of an initiative by the students to support one another with their learning. They help each other and rely on each other!

My Project

I love the idea of students having choice in the classroom, even down to their seating. Most of the flexible seating will be for our classroom library so kids can kick back and get comfy and cozy. In addition, having the balance balls at desks will support students in remaining alert and focused.

Different seating options work well for different students.

It can give certain students who may struggle an opportunity to thrive. Flexible seating will create a brand new environment conducive to learning, and I'm so excited to give my students comfortable furniture!
