My Students

Newport students represent incredible diversity. We are lucky to have students from other countries, as well as a great number of students who are transient and come and go from our schools quite frequently. Newport students come from all socioeconomic backgrounds, but 70% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch, meaning they come from poverty to some degree. Many of our struggling students take care of siblings at home, preparing meals, helping with homework, and providing other care. We are also seeing a new population of students who do not speak English as their primary language. This poses new and difficult challenges for our district. We work incredibly hard to meet the needs of all of our students.

Our students show a great passion for their community!

Our city comes together to work toward solutions, to both environmental issues and social concerns. This passion inspires many of our students to do so many voluntary, community-based projects. As teachers, we build on this strength and tie learning to the real world as much as possible.

My Project

Research shows that allowing students to sit in comfortable, flexible seating options greatly enhances their focus. With a fulfilled project, my classroom would change quite a bit. I would be able to offer my students a variety of seating options based on what best meets their needs. Students would be able to use flexible stools to help focus in our classroom. This option will allow them to become more comfortable, find a responsible working space and get the most out of our work times and classroom activities.

My project will make a difference because some students have a difficult time staying focused and on task in traditional classroom furniture.

My students will be able to work with a seating option that allows them to focus and stay comfortable, both of which are needed to produce quality work. I believe giving students the option to stand or sit on a flexible stool will enhance their concentration.
