Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Last year, my students experienced something truly transformative through our classroom reward store. Effort, participation, perseverance, and attendance were celebrated just as much as correct answers.

Through this project, my Multilingual Learners (MLLs) will learn that their voices matter, their presence counts, and their hard work leads to meaningful rewards.

The excitement and growth I witnessed inspired me to continue and expand this initiative.

This year, I am launching "Show Up, Speak Up, Shine!", a sequel project designed to build on that success by supporting my students' language development, confidence, and social-emotional growth.

In my ESL classroom, students earn classroom "dollars" for active participation, collaboration, effort, and consistent attendance. Over several weeks, they save their earnings in a visual pocket chart that reinforces number recognition, money vocabulary, and goal-setting skills. On "shopping day," students exchange their dollars for prizes and sensory-friendly items they choose themselves.

This system does far more than motivate participation. It encourages students to attend class consistently and engage more actively in learning. It introduces financial literacy concepts such as saving, budgeting, and understanding the value of money. It builds confidence as students see a direct connection between their effort and success. Most importantly, it creates authentic opportunities for students to practice English in meaningful, real-world situations.

Many of the rewards are thoughtfully selected to support sensory regulation, fine motor development, and emotional well-being, making them especially valuable for MLLs with exceptionalities.

For my students, shopping day is more than a reward. It is a celebration of perseverance, growth, and achievement. Your generosity will help create a classroom where students are motivated to show up, encouraged to speak up, and inspired to shine as they build the language and life skills needed for success.
