My Students

Our school strives to find the leader in all students. Every child has capabilities, talents, and strengths expounded by attending a Lighthouse School and living the 7 Habits daily. Leadership comes through exposure or motivation. I believe these students can find exposure or motivation through reading and participating in learning activities through library attendance.

Student goal setting is one aspect that helps students be accountable for their own learning.

Reading goal achievements help to build confidence and excitement in Lighthouse students. Previous readers have competed to earn top reader status and the recognition that goes along with that status. This confidence is a bolster during the Covid pandemic when so many of our students have had to quarantine. These last two years have been difficult for young learners due to COVID and we are buckling down, filling gaps, and making growth through reading. An inviting, well stocked, happy library atmosphere is just the place for this to happen.

Students get extremely excited when they discover that incentives may be tied to their participation in reading and learning. This excitement leads to increased confidence, strength in reading, and striving to increase vocabulary skills.

My Project

The materials and supplies that I am requesting for our library habitat will encourage students to take pride and leadership in their learning activities. Students need a pleasant, inviting, enjoyable place where they can hang out, learn through activities, and read for enjoyment and learning.

The stapler, scissors, colored pencils and other classroom supplies will be used by the students to complete library learning projects like genre posters, blackout poetry, illustrating book jackets, and creating multimedia projects.

Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. During silent sustained reading they can choose a location in the classroom that works for them. The bulletin board decorations and inspirational decor will assure an aesthetically pleasing atmosphere where students want to hang out. The historical reading materials will readily teach students about moments in history such as 9/11, Veteran's Day, and other holidays that have actual meaning.

I have seen how choice and availability can have an impact on student engagement and demeanor. I hope these additional resources will help us to grow even more in the aftermath of the Covid pandemic where students missed out on a lot of educational time and resources.
