Sharing Our Work With The Community

My students need 4 Flip video cameras so they can record and share their findings in science and practice new literacies.

My Students

My students love watching Youtube videos, but few of them have had the opportunity to be a producer of original video content. I want to give them the opportunity to create videos in the service of their work as scientists using 4 Flip video cameras to share their findings with the community.

My students are all male students from the Rochester City School District.

We are a charter school that aims to offer all city residents a single-sex option for high school preparatory education. We are a high poverty school with over 90% of our students receiving free lunch. This is only our second year, and my class will be the first Regents level science class at the school. Already, our first year test results show that we are outpacing the Rochester City School District. We hope to make more gains this year. That being said, our school is very basic. We are currently housed in an old elementary school building and have limited technological resources for the students to use. My students are interested in using new technological tools, and I want to embed them into my curriculum.

My Project

When I was student teaching last year at another school, I was able to give my students the opportunity to do a lab report using the camera instead of a more traditional method such as a formal write-up. I was very impressed as some of my students, that never seemed very interested in the lab work, blossomed as their creative instincts rose to the surface. I want to make this a regular practice this year, building towards our "expedition" at the end of the year. As an Expeditionary Learning school, my students will spend the last month of school examining an interdisciplinary question that has local impact (last year they analyzed pollution in a local river, including collecting data from different streams). This year, I would like to see my students employ social media as a means for communicating their findings with the community.

My students do not have computers or tech gadgets to play with at home.

The refurbished computers that we have at school regularly have problems connecting to the Internet. Regardless, I know that my students have creative talents to share and are eager to take an active role in this age of social media using these Flip video cameras.
