First, they learned how to make pour paintings. They used the Floetrol to mix custom colors to the correct viscosity. Then they poured layers of paint into the cups and lastly used the flip cup technique to create beautiful abstract paintings with flowing colors and \"cells\".\r\n\r\nWhile creating their pour paintings students captured the runoff paint on plastic covered tagboard. The runoff and drips from paint pouring are often as interesting (or even more interesting!) than the actual paintings. Once the extra paint had dried, they were able to peel it off the plastic and cut 1\" circles from their favorite areas. Finally, they used the bezel pendants and cabochons to create beautiful one-of-a-kind necklaces out of their original art.\r\n\r\nMy students were super excited throughout the process and very pleased to have a painting and a necklace to gift to someone they care about.","fullyFundedDate":1741131050654,"projectUrl":"project/boys-make-jewelry-too/9139133/","projectTitle":"Boys Make Jewelry, Too!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Dankert","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9799124_orig.png?crop=814,814,x0,y32&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1728508506756","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9799124"},{"teacherId":9796797,"projectId":8946523,"letterContent":"Your support has made a meaningful and lasting impact on our athletes, coaches, and the broader community we serve. Prior to your donation, many of our athletes faced significant challenges due to a lack of access to proper equipment. Limited resources meant that students often shared worn-out gear, or in some cases, went without. This not only hindered performance but also affected morale and participation. For many of our athletes, the playing field was not level—both figuratively and literally. Your contribution has helped change that. Thanks to your donation, our teams now have access to high-quality equipment These items are more than just tools. I believe they represent opportunity, pride, and motivation. Students hesitated to join due to lack of gear, but now step onto the field with confidence. Participation in Track and field has increased, and with it, so have the physical, emotional, and social benefits that come from being part of the team. Our coaches have also shared how this donation has transformed their training sessions. With proper materials, they can now implement more effective drills, reduce injury risks, and focus on skill development rather than resource limitations. The sense of professionalism and preparedness these materials provide has elevated the standards and expectations of our programs. Beyond the practical advantages, your donation sends a powerful message to our athletes: that they are seen, valued, and supported. For many, this is a crucial affirmation during a formative time in their lives. Not only track, but sports in general teach resilience, teamwork, leadership, and discipline. Qualities that help young men of color extend far beyond the court or field. Your generosity has helped ensure that every young man in our program has the chance to grow not just as an athlete, but as a person. Looking forward, the impact of your donation will continue to ripple through our community. Improved athletic participation contributes to better school engagement, stronger peer relationships, and healthier lifestyles. You have helped lay the foundation for future success, not just in sports, but in life. In every practice, every game, and every moment of growth, your contribution is felt. From all of us at Uprep thank you for believing in the power of sports and the potential of every athlete.","fullyFundedDate":1733360080610,"projectUrl":"project/bigger-faster-smarter-stronger/8946523/","projectTitle":"Bigger, Faster, Smarter, Stronger","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Brawner","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-9_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9796797"},{"teacherId":9783500,"projectId":8838686,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous contribution! When my students walked in and saw the fully stocked \"Coffee Bar\" and all the mindfulness tools—blankets, massagers, headphones, hair ties, snacks, and cleaning supplies—they were absolutely overjoyed. It was such a fun and heartwarming moment to watch everyone excitedly explore everything. It actually took about a week for the excitement to settle as students began to realize that our classroom was truly their space—a place where they belonged. They are especially grateful for having a secure location to store personal snacks and belongings, and they love being able to make coffee, tea, or cocoa midday as a way to relax or recharge.\r\n\r\nNow that we've integrated these resources into our daily routine, they've become a meaningful part of our Mindfulness lessons. The students enjoy wrapping up in blankets and using the massagers to unwind, especially after a long day or a tough sports practice. More importantly, our classroom has become a safe space for restorative conversations, focused learning, and moments of calm when students need to reset. Your support has helped create an environment where students feel seen, supported, and empowered. Thank you for helping make that possible.","fullyFundedDate":1731100154477,"projectUrl":"project/mrs-ks-classroom/8838686/","projectTitle":"Mrs. K.’s Classroom","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. K.","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9783500_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1733520874930","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mrsk-uprep"},{"teacherId":9799124,"projectId":8868383,"letterContent":"This is my 13th year teaching at my school and this year I'm super excited to be teaching an elective for my older advanced students. I have been teaching this group of students for 4-5 years and we have built a really fun art-making community. This year my goal was to push them all beyond their comfort zones by introducing new materials and techniques and encouraging experimentation and reflection. \r\n\r\nWe made stamps at the beginning of the school year so my students had some recent experience with printmaking. After reviewing printmaking basics, they had a full week to experiment with the Gelli plates and Liquitex acrylic paint. It was very cool to see them working in pairs and small groups to try out rolling gradients, using stencils, and playing with layers. They were not deterred when a print didn't work out how they expected. Instead they quickly evaluated, made a new plan, and tried again. \r\n\r\nThank you all again. These materials will continue to provide fun and playful artmaking throughout this school year and in years to come.","fullyFundedDate":1729308231875,"projectUrl":"project/art-is-fun-students-engage-with-new-pri/8868383/","projectTitle":"Art is FUN: Students Engage with New Printmaking Materials","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Dankert","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9799124_orig.png?crop=814,814,x0,y32&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1728508506756","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9799124"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_98957","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":515,"numTeachers":40,"percentFrplEligible":68,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":73,"percentWhite":3,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":13,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"12.9:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":57.6,"schoolId":98957,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about University Preparatory Charter School Young Men on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"University Preparatory Charter School Young Men","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-york/new-york-state-department-education/university-preparatory-charter-school-for-young-men/98957"}
