Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work at a Title One school were over 80% of the students are socially and economically disadvantaged. Over 50% of the students are second language learners. Parent engagement is low and students come to school with varying levels of support.
My students are amazing.
There are like little sponges, eager to learn and soak up everything that is taught to them. They come to the classroom with a wealth of knowledge, but many times they have a hard time transferring their home language knowledge to academic English. I use big books to do read a louds with my students and to give them opportunities to share their knowledge.
My Project
As part of the Balanced Literacy approach to reading proficiency, students need ample opportunities to have books read to them. Through Shared Reading of big books, I will explicitly model to my students the strategies and skills that proficient readers utilize.
Big Books give my students the opportunity to have an interactive reading experience.
The large sized books allow them to pay attention to the details of the pictures and the features of the text. Together we will read the book, notice text features and discuss the story details. Students will work together to solve words and talk about strategies that we use when reading.
