My awesome scholars are located in Washington, DC. Although they face widespread poverty and a high crime rate in low-income and under-resourced areas, our school has a great tradition and great pride.
Education is a long-term solution to poverty, which is why it is essential that all students are afforded the same opportunities to have equal access to educational material regardless of their disability and socio-economic factors.
Schools that offer a diverse library where students can choose a text that is both interesting and aligned with the curriculum are proven to engage more in their lesson. Shelves will save valuable class time by making it easier to access text inside and other material inside labeled containers. It also helps students develop leadership skills as a group captain and member, as each student performs classroom jobs by distributing and gathering material on their own.
A child’s success or failure isn’t only determined by cognitive skills, as once thought; Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and team building are most related to character, including grit, optimism, and self-awareness.
Help me give my students new bookshelves to make a new reading library corner and additional space to store additional classroom material in our labeled classroom bins. The shelves will help organize the classroom theme books as well as the Accelerated Reader books by level.
By having the books out and by labeling the shelves for the students they will maximize instructional time and take ownership of their space and daily routines, by being able to pick out the material and book of their choice at their level without a lot of searching!
Previous shelves were not sturdy enough to hold heavy books, resulting in them warping and causing the bins to fall. The heavy-duty shelves will ensure books and other heavy material can be placed on them year after year. They can also be pulled apart and easily stored at the end of the year when our custodians need to remove all furniture in order to strip and wax the floors.
