This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The majority of my students have no access to historical and critical documents on Shakespeare and his life and times. Our library is too small to hold too many books on one subject and access to the Internet is slow at best, unavailable too often and also unreliable.

My students encompass a wide range of both intellectual and socio-economic differences.

The majority of my students speak english as a second language and come from areas steeped in poverty. I also teach highly gifted students who come from all over our metropolitan area. But no matter their situations, they all come to learn and I would love to provide them with access to materials that they cannot get in our small library. Shakespeare is a large part of my curriculum

My Project

I have a passion for Shakespeare and believe that my passion ignites a similar feeling in my students. Mastering Shakespeare gives my students a feeling of accomplishment and when they are able to read and understand the language on their own, there is a sense of pride that permeates all their other school work. Because the plays of Shakespeare were not written in a vacuum, it necessary, for my students to understand the time in which Shakespeare lived and the political and cultural events that shaped his writing. Thus, I am requesting books that give information on Shakespeare the man as well as historical information on the time period. One of the best ways of understanding Shakespeare is to perform it so I am also requesting scripts and books of scenes and monologues for students to perform. The materials I am requesting are not available in our school library and would certainly allow my students to do deeper research on the subject matter.

Shakespeare touches the hearts and minds of everyone who reads his works.

But it is not enough to stop with the words on the page. Shakespeare is a wide and deep subject and when students are intellectually curious about the work, I want the resources to satisfy and perhaps stimulate that curiosity.
