My Project

Each year in May, my grade-level ELA team introduces William Shakespeare to our 6th graders. We finish the unit with Shakespearian plays (Macbeth, A Midsummer Night's Dream, and Twelfth Night) adapted for a younger audience. Students will audition for parts, memorize their scripts, practice stage choreography, and get all dressed up for their final performance. This year we would like to include backdrops that help create the appropriate atmosphere and some additional costumes and props.

The students are excited when they realize they not only get to perform their memorized plays, but it includes costumes as well!

Allowing students to use the arts in conjunction with their content learning is a great way to increase their motivation and keep them engaged throughout the last month of school. Costuming 3 separate plays (each play being performed in 6 periods) can be difficult, especially since we don't have a budget to work with. Providing backdrops that fit the theme of the play as well as additional costumes and props will improve the confidence of our students and help them perform at their best.
