This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Did you know that one in three students in urban schools in the United States experience some form of trauma before they enter school? My school is located in the heart of Louisville, Kentucky in an area with high crime and poverty. We, too, see more and more students entering each year with trauma induced social and emotional deficits. It is our job as teachers to help our students to overcome the adversity and excel academically.
As the art teacher, I create an outlet to help my students on their journey of healing through creativity.
With a degree in school counseling, I've been afforded with the task of developing meaningful activities that will give my students time to collaborate, create, and discover their imaginative selves through the process of art. Art is healing, and I've seen many students grow, blossom, and bloom from seeing the beauty within come out into the art they create.
My Project
Over the past two years we have been working to create a fashion design class as an outlet for creativity, individuality, and self-esteem building within my school. Thanks to donors choose (and some amazing local businesses and news outlets) we were able to get 8 sewing machines for our classroom! However, there's still some things we desperately need before we will be able to become the project runway stars that we envision!
With your donation to our project we will be able to actually cut the fabric (with REAL scissors instead of safety scissors), glue on buttons, decoration, and embellishments and begin our endeavor in creating things to give back to our local community!
It's amazing what these future fashion designers have created out of trash and with your help we will be able to do so much more!
