I'm Micca and I teach in an inner city school in the heart of Louisville KY only a few miles away from historic locations such as Churchill Downs and the childhood home of boxing great Muhammad Ali. While it may appear that our school is thrust into a metropolis of history, art, and culture it's also important to mention that our population is 100% free lunch and 89% minority, meaning many of or students have never experienced these popular tourist attractions themselves. My role this year is to help change that by developing and teaching cultural arts as a special area class! I get to teach the fun stuff by combining elements of music, art, dance, drama, literature and history to expose our students to various activities that will enhance their value of "place" in the world all while bringing cultural relevance into the classroom! Together we can help our students to dream beyond the streets they live on!
