Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school has over 500 students in grades PK-5. In addition to regular education classrooms, we have a Dual Language classroom in every grade. We are located in the South Bronx. We are a Title I school. More than 80 percent of the students at our school receive free lunch. More than 70 percent of our students are Hispanic and over 25 percent are Black. Our students are at a financial disadvantage.
My class has a group of special students in the school.
They are new in the country and have language barriers, academic needs, and financial needs. They are forming new cultural identities while they work in their English, math, reading, and writing. They work hard every day and they are super eager to learn.
My class needs different ways to get engaged and motivated.
My Project
My students love learning new skills, and hobbies A sewing and knitting machine will support their curiosity and love for learning.
We are working on developing a deeper appreciation of traditional life skills.
Learning how to sew and knit will provide them not only with a hobby but also with a life skill, as well as a deeper appreciation for the value of handmade products. Students will wear their handmade hats to keep warm proudly.
Students will have the opportunity to learn, make and take, and also donate a product to students in our school as living examples of kindness and care.
