My students need play-doh, glue sticks, painting aprons, headphone splitters, sheet protectors, tripod, computer speakers, and laminating pouches to help us learn in a variety of ways.
I teach at a Title I school in Oakland, a large urban city, where 100% of our students are on a free lunch plan. Our Kindergarten students come from a wide variety of locations throughout Oakland, and for many, school acts as a safe, stable environment.
Kindergarten is an opportunity to set the stage for a lifetime of learning.
Students who leave kindergarten understanding how they learn academically, socially, emotionally, and imaginatively, are more likely to stay engaged in school throughout their entire childhood. If you set the stage for their academic career by creating clear structures, students will be able to expand their own thinking in unique ways in a safe and community learning focused environment. Student led classrooms allow students to learn at their own pace and in their own way. This translates to increased academic growth as well as allowing my students to develop the life skills they need to become the future citizens we need to be leading our nation.
My Project
For most kindergarten students, the moment they step into the classroom on the first day of school they make observations about the educational world they will live in for the next 17-20 years of their lives (in kindergarten we are already getting ready for college). The skills we teach in kindergarten will set students up for the rest of their educational careers. If you start off their educational career with systems to keep them organized (that they will learn to tailor to their needs), supplies for them to create with, and a classroom environment that encourages growth and learning, you've given a student more than just a great kindergarten year. You've allowed them to learn HOW they learn, a skill they will need to flourish during their educational journey.
All students deserve access to the supplies they need to learn, regardless of where they live or go to school.
As a Title I teacher in an urban city, we don't get a starting the year budget to buy supplies for our classrooms. I rely on Donor's Choose and support from people like you to get the basics that my students need to start the year. "Magic" glue sticks allow us to add realia to our learning portfolio, sheet protectors and laminating pouches allow me to create dry erase work that allows us to use less paper and become environmentally conscious, the tripod and computer speakers will allow me to bring more technology into the classroom (green screen videos here we come!), and the headphone splitters will greatly support group listening activities. Finally, play-doh is magic, and we use it every day to promote fine motor skills while building letters, numbers, our names, engineering challenges, and as a tool for learning the power of mindfulness.
