This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are great at setting, tracking, and achieving learning goals. I'm impressed with their dedication to learning. Because they have so much experience setting learning goals, I want help them see that goal-setting can be used in all aspects of their lives.

The students at my school are driven by their past accomplishments; they've learned that hard work equals academic achievement.

They look at the weekly learning goals that they set and they cheer when they (or students from other classrooms) reach those goals. My students are students who are learning to look forward, who are learning to become the people they want to be.

My Project

During the upcoming school year, I plan to add personal goal-setting to the already-established academic goal-setting activities that my students take part in every week. Teaching a unit based on parts of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens would allow my students to develop context for the personal goals they would like set. In addition, the book contains some vivid anecdotes that help students realize that their peers often have the same feelings, concerns, and worries that they do.

I've seen the impact of academic goals in the classroom -- our students moved our school up to the status of Performing Plus last year.

I've also seen highly motivated language learners develop impressive fluency and understanding of the English language. I truly believe that my students would benefit from someone who, on a weekly basis, will help them set and monitor personal goals that help them develop the character traits that *they* are interested in developing.
