Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I teach CTE Carpentry in a self-contained special education school locate in an underserved community in my city. All of the students I teach have disabilities that range from autism to emotional disturbance. I love working with them because the love the content I teach. Many students do not have the opportunity to touch and use tools at home. My shop puts real tools in their hands. It’s my hope that students enjoy working with tools so much they decide to join the skilled trades when they complete high school.

College is not for everyone but the skills to join the workforce should be!

My district has chosen my school to participate in a program that builds adaptive devices for multiple handicapped students. We will build chocks and wheelchair trays out of birch plywood and a material called trywall, which is a material that resembles cardboard but has the strength of wood. Woodworking tools are used to process it.

This is a wonderful opportunity for the students in our CTE carpentry program to put their skills to use and help other students in our district who need the items we will build.

The power tech set up blocks will be used to set up our tools and machines for layout in the shop. Layout directly on plywood and trywall will be done as well.

The power tech set up blocks will be used to set gauges. Having them in shop will add another level of precision to the students' work.
