Sentence Strips: From Simple Sentences To Well Developed Essays

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
All the students are learning English as a new language. Reading and writing in a new language is the last part of development. We write phrases and concepts on sentence strips. Our classes work in "Jigsaw groups". Each table has a reading or picture to study. We cover the pictures in plastic covers so that we don't need to print them again. Students also use them to keep important study sheets protected.
The sentence strips are used in jigsaw groups so students can organize them and create new sentences and paragraphs.
We also use the dry-erase markers and erasers with dry-erase strips to generate sentences and quickly make corrections. Having the opportunity to custom craft our lessons and save them in coversheets saves time and resources for the next classes to use them.
My students are hardworking and humble. They say please and thank you. They are truly grateful when food and supplies are provided for them to do their classwork. In the past when students snacked on candy and soda they routinely became very drowsy after eating candy in class.
The presence of Clif Bars and Chomps in the classroom has changed the focus level of the students. The scholars and the athletes alike reach for one and a cup of water and quietly return to their classwork.
