My Project

Our elementary school students deserve a safe, supportive environment where they can learn how to regulate their emotions, explore sensory input in healthy ways, and feel successful throughout the school day. We are hoping to create and expand a sensory room designed specifically to meet the needs of our special education population, including many students with autism and other sensory processing differences.

For many children with autism, sensory tools are not simply “extras” — they are essential supports that help students feel calm, organized, and ready to learn.

Many of our students experience sensory overload, difficulty with emotional regulation, anxiety, or challenges transitioning throughout the school day. A sensory room provides a structured, safe space where students can reset their bodies and minds using purposeful sensory experiences.

The items requested for this project will encourage self-regulation, sensory exploration, emotional calming, and focus. Tools such as sensory seating, calming lights, tactile activities, fidgets, swings, weighted items, and movement-based materials can help students develop coping skills and regain control during overwhelming moments. These supports allow students to return to the classroom more prepared to engage in learning and social interactions.

Sensory exploration is especially important for young learners with special needs because it helps strengthen body awareness, attention, communication, and emotional understanding. By providing students with access to appropriate sensory input, we are helping them build independence and confidence while reducing frustration and behavioral challenges.

This sensory room will benefit students across multiple grade levels and ability levels by creating an inclusive environment where every child feels supported and understood. Your generosity will help provide our students with meaningful tools that promote regulation, comfort, and success both inside and outside the classroom.
