Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a Title I school located in a lower-socioeconomic (high poverty) area in Salem, OR. Many of our students come from bilingual households where their first language is Spanish, Russian or another language represented at our school. As a school, our goal is to focus on college and career readiness both academically and behaviorally. Our school provides a rigorous curriculum, wonderful, supportive teachers, and a safe learning environment for all kids.
School is a place where our students practice being citizens by adhering to our school values: being safe, respectful, responsible, and kind.
Despite the challenges students face at home and at school, we are always trying to create meaningful academic and social-emotional experiences that pique their interests. All of our students want to do well; we continue to need tools and supports to help every child build skills to achieve their potential.
Our students have experienced trauma, abuse, neglect, and far more adverse childhood experiences than any person should. However, they come to school with a desire to learn, grow, and overcome challenges. Many think school is a place to learn reading, writing, and math. Our students must also learn they are valued and resilient people.
My Project
Each day, our school feeds over 500 students free breakfast and lunch due to the high poverty area that we serve. On Fridays, kids are sent home with bags of nonperishable food items to eat over the weekend. During the day, we often have students who are upset, frustrated, or overwhelmed come to our sensory/calming room. Often times, hunger is a large part of their struggle. Eating a simple snack while talking about how they can communicate with adults to get their most basic needs met is often all it takes to help a student return to learning.
Snacks such as pretzels, fruit leather, frozen ice pops, frozen peas and berries, frozen yogurt melts, and carrots each provide an oral motor sensory experience that our students bodies need.
Our classroom regularly supplies snacks to students: granola bars, cheese sticks, sandwiches, and crackers. We want our students to have additional access to foods that can alert or calm their bodies. In order to provide a variety of foods, we need a refrigerator to store items that need to be kept cool and frozen. Meeting students sensory needs through food is another strategy to help students be better able to focus and learn in school.
