My students are special education students that are considered to have multiple disabilities. Most of the students fall somewhere on the Autism Spectrum and could have a second diagnosis as well. The students are in a self contained classroom and work very hard throughout the school day. My students don't let their disabilities interfere with their happiness or their desire to learn. My students are affected by the hardships that coincide with living in an inner city and can experience poverty, drug use in the home, different forms of abuse, and homelessness.
My Project
The items that I am asking for will be used to create a sensory room where students can go throughout the school day. The sensory room will be used to deescalate behaviors, calm students, and fulfill sensory needs for students with disabilities.
The use of a sensory room will be beneficial by increasing brain function, developing and activating senses, providing a secure environment, and heightening awareness.
The sensory room will use a range of stimuli to promote sensory awareness such as chairs for movement, special lighting, calming music, and aromas.
A sensory room is a research based environment that will be very beneficial to my students.
