My Project

I love my students with sensory challenges and want them to feel safe, supported, and capable of being successful in school. Many of my high school students with autism experience significant sensory overload from loud hallways, bright fluorescent lighting, crowded classrooms, strong smells, and constant transitions throughout the day. When their sensory needs are unmet, it can lead to anxiety, shutdowns, meltdowns, or difficulty focusing, which directly impacts learning and behavior. A sensory room provides essential tools—such as adjustable lighting, quiet seating, movement options, tactile supports, and calming visuals—that help students regulate their nervous systems and regain control. Having access to these tools allows students to build self-regulation skills, return to class ready to learn, and participate more fully in their education. A sensory room is not a luxury; it is a necessary support that helps my students feel understood, respected, and empowered to succeed academically and emotionally.
