My Students

The demographics at my school consist of Black: 65%, Hispanic or Latino: 30%, White: 2%, English language learners: 11%, and Students with special needs: 33%. Most students come from poor income households and live in foster homes and shelters. Many families are single-parent households and/or working families. We are a Title I school in Harlem. All of our students receive free breakfast and lunch daily. The students at my school are a mixture of different types of learners. My class is an inclusion class with general education and special needs students.

Having sensory materials will help my students to focus on academics and calm and regulate their emotions to develop their mental health.

My hope with these materials is to make sure that we can meet each child at their level and increase their curiosity about learning.

My Project

Several of my students have ADHD and emotional concerns, so they have difficulty focusing and regulating their emotions. Having these sensory materials will help them to calm down their emotions or help them to feel safe when their lives feel chaotic. The sensory playdough and sensory sand will help my students to have something to play and create while calming their emotions and anxieties.

I found my students will focus better when their emotional well-being improves and they feel safe in the classroom!

The other sensory materials will be used to develop students' knowledge of numbers and letters and also developed their fine motor skills. These materials will help my students take charge of their learning in a way that makes sense to them.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
