Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As a school social worker, many students come to me when they are dysregulated and dealing with many different emotions/feelings. Most student are seeking some kind of sensory input to support their needs (unconsciously). Many of the items requested would help my students with their calming down process and allowing them to return to the classroom to continue with their learning.

These sensory items will help them deal with their stress, frustration, anger and/or anxiety.

Having sensory toys in the classroom can be a great decision. They surely benefit children, especially those who are sensory seekers. By allowing them to play with sensory toys at a thoughtful time, they are engaged to interact and maintain focus.

WHAT ARE SENSORY TOYS FOR?

So, how do sensory toys help? How do these magical objects work? The fact that some of our learners in the classroom need sensory experiences to help them gain concentration, thus which is why sensory toys exist. Sensory toys help children stimulate their senses which can help them to learn. As the name suggests, these specially-designed toys stimulate the five senses namely hearing, touch, smell, taste, and sight.

With sensory stimulation, children are helped to develop their mental abilities. Playing with sensory toys signifies brain activities that help children to become more alert and focused.

With the use of sensory toys, children can make meaning of what’s happening around them. When they learn about their senses, they are more empowered on doing things they like.
