My Students

The student's I'm teaching this year have a range of different disabilities and most are medically fragile. Many of my students require a wheelchair for mobility as well as a host of gate trainers, mobilizers, and specialized braces and shoes. The school is located in one the most poverty stricken areas of our county with over 80% of the school on free or reduced meal plans. More often than not parents are unable to provide even the basic necessities for their special needs children (diapers, food, etc.) let alone the extra materials needed for their education.

My Project

These materials will be used to enhance the lives of profoundly disabled students. Making school a meaningful and exciting experience is my goal. With these materials, my students will attain life skills and develop and practice fine and gross motor abilities.

Many students with severe impairments have strong sensory needs that must be met in order to learn new skills.

The sensory toys, fidgets, and busy boards will provide that tactile, visual, and auditory stimulation necessary to fulfill their needs. I can envision student's learning many life skills using the play kitchen and cleaning sets. Also the gross motor development that can lead to goals like feeding oneself and even writing.
