My Students

My fourth graders are an eclectic group of people pleasers, with demeanors ranging from shy and reserved to loud and boisterous. They are “big kids,” toddlers one moment and emotional pre teens the next. Each day brings new adventures and challenges as they stretch their wings and define themselves as both members of a community and individuals. It is a blessing to be entrusted each day with these children during such a vulnerable and exciting stage of their development!

As a special education teacher on a 3rd-4th grade looping inclusion team, I am acutely aware of how much energy is required for many of my students to focus and sustain their effort in a physical environment that is not always hospitable to their very real physical and emotional needs.

A new school building is being built mere feet outside our windows, a constant source of unexpected noise and vibration. Squirmy kids struggle to contain their energy while anxious kids battle rising panic. Distractible kids share space with chatterboxes, while jumpy kids experience adrenaline rushes sitting next to peers who are in constant motion. So many conflicting needs, each one as important as the next!

My Project

Reducing the impact of environmental stressors will free up more capacity for learning. Softening the lights, reducing the noise, and offering flexible seating options will support this, as well as increase students’ overall comfort in their classroom. For the students who need to move, wobble stools and exercise balls will help them focus on learning while getting the stimulation they need. Children who are distracted or uncomfortable with ambient noise can wear noise blocking headphones. For the kids who crave touch or pressure, or who want to join their friends on the rug but have reduced core strength, there are comfy seats for the floor. And to create an overall calmer environment in the room, I’d like to use fluorescent light filters.
