Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

All of my students are in my Resource English class as they are qualified as Special Education students. Several students are diagnosed on the autism spectrum, some have dyslexia, ADHD, seizure disorder, reading specific learning disorders - no matter their diagnosis, they haven't been successful in a traditional classroom setting.

Changing the classroom setting to be more sensory-friendly will increase their chances of success in the classroom!

Right now, they have harsh fluorescent overhead lighting, off-white walls, off-white floors, hard plastic chairs, no windows to the outside, and traditional white paper. Some of my students with dyslexia have colored overlays in order to help them read, but when they are writing, the only option is plain white paper, which makes it harder for them to read their own writing.

I intend to make the classroom a better environment for them by giving seating options for when they are overstimulated. I also want to have the feeling of windows - being able to see the trees that cover the lights serves this purpose. It also helps dim the harsh fluorescent overhead lights. The lamps will also provide a different lighting source - one closer to their paper, not overhead, to reduce eyestrain. All these resources will work together to create an inviting space that helps them get their work done with fewer struggles.
