Multiple students have been reading ahead because they don't want to wait, and others are already asking if we will be reading the next book. This is year 18 of my teaching career and I don't know that I have ever had this much excitement about reading a book in class. This wouldn't be possible without you and their excitement has been fanning the flames of this teacher. \r\n\r\nWe will continue reading and hope to finish The Hunger Games before Christmas break. It may seem like a simple addition, but it will have a powerful impact on our classroom. This will make a tremendous difference in both their academic success and overall well-being.\r\n\r\nYour kindness does more than fill supply shelves—it shows our students that there are people who believe in their potential and want to see them succeed. Making and selling bracelets is one of their favorite things to do. We were able to have a pizza party at the end of last school year thanks to money generated from the sales. Of course, their favorite thing to do is when they are allowed to design and make a bracelet for themselves.\r\n\r\n The purpose of bracelets is to help with many life skills that a lot of us would take for granted. Learning how to follow directions and patterns, time management, accountability, and so many other positive skills. We let them design their own bracelets to help them embrace and explore their artistic side and individuality. By selling the bracelets they must interact with their peers and learn about money (math) and get over their fear of talking to strangers (in a safe environment). The list could go on and on but thank you for helping to alter the lives of so many in such a postivie way.","fullyFundedDate":1742220872247,"projectUrl":"project/bracelets-for-sale/9111046/","projectTitle":"Bracelets for Sale","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Kurth","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-9_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9922536"},{"teacherId":9343977,"projectId":9107712,"letterContent":"I think my student said it best, \" Finishing a full novel made me look at books very different, because not all books are boring to read there are some that you can practice your reading with\". As they read their novels, they kept up with commonplace books to note anything and everything that was interesting to them about what they read. Their commonplace books also served as a way for them to track what they could personally connect to within the text, and what real world connections they could make. \r\n\r\nAs our culminating unit project for these novels, students created artworks to metaphorically represent either themselves, a personal struggle or triumph, or a vision of what they want their future to include. (which you can see in the shared pictures!)\r\n\r\nStudents overall reading comprehension grew immensely by engaging with longform texts, and they really pushed themselves to see how literature connects to themselves and the world around us. Some days, we read together as a whole class to experience key parts of the text together. Other days, students read with a small group or partners to dig deeper into the text. Other days still, students read entirely on their own to practice reading stamina and comprehension. We got a lot of reading practice mileage out of these two novels!\r\n\r\nHere are what some students had to say about the books:\r\n\"This book was easy to finish in such a short amount of time because of how entertaining it was. I often caught myself reading 20-30 pages past the required reading for the day because of how engulfed I was into the plot! I think that the poetic style and vocabulary of the novel made it a little more difficult to understand, but just made the experience much more fun and creative. \"\r\n\r\n\"The book was very intriguing to me and I always caught myself reading ahead.\" \r\n\r\n\"This book will make you think about family, where you come from, and why it's important to be yourself.\"\r\n\r\n\" I'm a big fan of how realistic and colorful the book is, and I think you too will find this between the pages.\"\r\n\r\n\" The book is very raw and carries value. It is definitely one I already have and would definitely suggest reading.\"\r\n\r\n\" It is an extremely moving book that is both sad yet finally hopeful and wellworth a read.\"\r\n\r\nI personally have never experienced so many students so engaged with reading in class.
