Sensory for Self-Regulation

My students need medicine balls, scooters and bean bag chairs to give them the physical space and energy release they need to help their bodies regulate and to meet their sensory needs.

My Students

I am a special education teacher with a group of amazing students who want to do their best. Sometimes this isn't easy for them due to circumstances that are out of their control. They face challenges stemming from their disabilities, family circumstances, and environmental impacts. They have all experienced some type of trauma in their lives.

While each of my students have different challenges, the one thing they have in common is that they all want to fit in and to have friends.

This is extremely difficult for this group of students because they do not know how to regulate their emotions. They do not have the coping strategies needed to handle their feelings. When they become upset, they show their feelings in ways that impact their ability to form meaningful relationships.

I am passionate about helping my students develop the skills needed to navigate the many different emotions they go through. I want to provide a safe place for them to go when they feel "out of control" and need a way to express how they feel. My students are just like every other child, they want to fit in and and have friends.

My Project

These items and materials will help my students self-regulate themselves and learn coping strategies. Using scooters to get their bottled up energy out will allow them to better concentrate in class. Having a safe area to go to that is welcoming, with bean bags and fidgets and heavy pressure items, will allow them to practice their coping strategies and calm themselves.

Research shows that movement breaks, quiet spaces, and deep pressure activities help students in self-regulation of their emotions.

These items will provide the opportunities to do this and give them a safe space for them to learn. This will help them control their emotions effectively and to form meaningful relationships with friends.
