Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
WOW!! As I am asked to simplify my 7 outstanding kiddos in to two to three paragraphs, I am truly humbled by each & every one of them & their talents & love for learning.
What makes each & every single one of my students unique is their need for a specialized, diverse education, that draws on their strengths.
I have 7 students in my classroom, each with multiple disabilities that effect their educational performance (some who are medically fragile). I have the honor of working with related service providers (an occupational therapist, physical therapists, a speech/language pathologist, teacher for the visually impaired, adapted physical education teacher, & a teacher for the hearing impaired) to create a safe, appropriate & inclusive learning environment for each of the kids in my class.
My students will truly make your heart explode with their love for life & learning! They thrive off of a daily routine. Our daily routine includes sensory exploration & sensory breaks. All of my students benefit from sensory exploration, as a way to get out pent up energy & regulate their senses & to help them feel "okay". Our days are extremely busy, but we always incorporate sensory exploration!
My Project
With the 4-bin sensory table, I will be able to create FOUR different, individualized sensory centers for my emergent learners! Most of the students in my class learn best through sensory exploration. I would include academic materials in the sensory stations, including possibly: letter of the week, sight words, weekly science theme, numbers, letters of their name, etc. With this sensory table, the options are truly endless. And the table can be higher or lower, depending on students' sizes or if they need wheelchair accessibility. The lids for the sensory table are a must, to keep things safe, neat, and organized (some little fingers just can't resist the urge to touch at all times).
The washable sensory-play materials provide students with the perfect "base" for the sensory tables (before academic materials are added).
These materials have a fantastic mix of different textures and feel, which helps students stay engaged and intrigued. The fact that they are washable is even better, considering the students often use their mouth to explore their environment and tasks at hand. We can easily put these materials in a strainer basket and disinfect them each afternoon to ensure a safe learning environment, especially for the medically fragile kiddos!
Together, these materials will create a perfect sensory-friendly, center station for my students for years to come. The sensory stations can easily be adapted for all types of learners and their unique needs!
