They are able to sit and work independently or with a buddy. The students love that they can move the pieces in the books. We have been able to go outside to paint on our new easel with our new paints and brushes. Our students have shown great growth in their motor skills as they paint. We have also been able to fine tune our motor skills by using our ribbon wands, button art toy, and scooping kinetic sand into our ice cream cones. One of our students has shown that he can match colors by putting the rings on the color sorting board. One of our students is practicing her social skills by using the styling kit and asking other friends if she can do their hair and make-up. We are making so much growth with our fine motor skills and learning a lot as we play with our new activities that we received through our Donor's Choose project. We use our sensory items daily and they all really help our students to regulate their emotions and stay calm to be able to work. They especially love the sensory play items! The wagon really helps us get some of our students to and from the playground and to the busses and it also serves as a transition item for some of our students. \r\n\r\nWe also love the puppets and we use those to retell stories. Our nonverbal students are able to use the puppets and participate in showing what the characters do in the story. \r\n\r\nSome of our favorite items are the vibrating bumble bee and the sensory mats. Our students love to take their shoes off and walk across the mats to feel the different textures on their feet. One of our students likes to run the trucks over the mats. A couple of our students will use the vibrating bumblebee to calm down when they are upset. It is easy to turn on and the students love the vibrating feeling. The donated materials have changed the classroom environment to a fun learning environment. I received some number lines with a blank equation underneath it. The students love to use these when they are doing addition or subtraction. They told me it is fun to use the boards. \r\n\r\nWhen I first brought the boxed of materials into the classroom and explained to the students that the items were donated by people who believed they could use them respectfully and purposefully, they were excited. We opened the boxes and I let the students explore what was in there. After a bit, I took each item and explained what we would use them for and how to use them. \r\n\r\nThe materials have turned my classroom into a fun learning environment. They love to take the materials out of the cabinet and use them. Its not paper and pencil and they love that!!\r\n\r\nThe next steps are for the students to use the materials independently as they already know how to use them. With their new knowlege of using the digital card catalog, they are searching the historical event that the I Survived graphic novel they enjoyed was about, and finding other books to deepen their knowlege. This behavior is a librarian's dream come true!
