My Project

Each of my special education students have brains and bodies that process their school experiences differently. To help the gain the most they can from the learning and social events of their everyday in school, incorporating sensory experiences can help.

Many everyday items can be used in the classroom and with learning activities to provide more sensory input in to a child's growing mind and body.

Blankets that wrap softly and snugly can help students develop their body awareness, when they are growing, highly emotional, or calm and ready to learn. Visual experiences, low light with florescent light covers and gently moving toys such as the jellyfish lamp and toy aquarium, can help students maintain a calm body and mind for learning.

By providing these opportunities in my classroom, my goal is to keep students in the classroom and learning while they calm themselves, make a choice to come to my classroom when they feel dysregulated, and to help them gain skills to regulate themselves in stressful or triggering situations.
