Help me give my students planters, succulent seeds and potting soil to create wellness gifts for our local senior retirement center.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I teach a special education class for students with exceptional needs. Our students learn using an alternate curriculum. Most of our students are nonverbal, but they are able to communicate using sign language, gestures, and alternative communication devices. I have nine curious students who do not let their disabilities limit them from learning and accessing the world around them. They are eager to learn and share what they know with everyone they meet. They are friendly and very inquisitive. Our students come to school with a positive attitude and enjoy learning and helping one another.

Daily living skills is one of the necessary components of getting our students to be independent citizens.

It would be wonderful to teach my students to give back to the community while learning about Earth Science. My hope is to grow succulents with my students and then bringing them to our Gardena Retirement Center to cheer up our elders. I think it's important for my students to understand the need to promote wellness with people in our community. I know that my students are very kind and receptive to those individuals who treat them well. I know they would love to pay it forward. It will also be an amazing opportunity for my students to collaborate with their general ed peers. This project will nurture empathy, teamwork, and a profound sense of social responsibility. My students will learn more about compassion and promote wellness in our school and community.
