Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work at a large, public middle school in San Francisco where 80% of students are students of color, 60% are English language learners, 90% come from low-income backgrounds, and 23% are students with learning disabilities. Our entire school site qualifies for free or reduced lunches.
In the past three years, we have strived to take students that represent our school demographic.
The students that have attended this trip in the past have learned about American ideals like inclusion, diversity, and justice. This trip is more eye-opening than a history textbook could ever be.
My Project
It seems that all of our news centers around politics. Anti-immigrant statements, protests, and the resurgence of hate speech makes us question what America we live in. The America that our students are coming of age in is a turbulent place. There is no better time to give them the opportunity to experience firsthand America's capitol and its layered history.
James Lick Middle School is trying to send 50 students to Washington, DC next year and we need your help.
We need to fund raise over $15,000 in total and we are hoping to raise half of that through the generous contributions of the community.
On our trip, we will visit the U.S. Capitol, the Supreme Court, several Smithsonian museums (including the African American History and Culture Museum), tour the memorials in the National Mall, Mt. Vernon, and the Holocaust Musuem.
Please spare a few dollars and help us out. Our students are our future. They are the future lawyers, senators, and presidents of this country. Help me give them their first glimpse of politics and civil rights.
