Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My seventh- and eighth-grade students are an exuberant bunch of teens who love to socialize and have fun. My students are diversity personified—from painfully shy to audacious, from studious to silly, from spoiled to neglected, from being treasured to experiencing trauma.

After 18 months of being isolated from their friends and teachers, they are still trying to navigate the return to school and academics.

Many of them are have developed anxieties that may potentially take years to overcome. Getting back to normal hasn't come soon enough—we need to mitigate the learning loss and social isolation they have experienced for the past 18 months. Unfortunately, many of them have lost close family members to COVID-19 and are struggling with grief as well.

Although I can't solve these problems, I continue to do my very best to provide my students with learning opportunities that will excite them and allow them to focus on better days ahead.

My Project

I have never encountered so many PAINFULLY shy students in my 15 years as an educator. Every day, we try different icebreaker activities, and many of my students are too shy to say even one word to other students. I am doing my best to break through the shells they have built up during this pandemic, but I need more ideas and activities to encourage them.

Social-emotional growth has been severely stunted during the pandemic, so I am asking for some social-emotional learning tools to help encourage my students to connect with each other.

The games, icebreakers, stickers, and lessons I am asking for will give me a lot of different approaches to helping them navigate the choppy waters of post-pandemic social life. Thank you for supporting their social-emotional growth and development!
