Students selected a Harlem Renaissance icon to research, wrote a biographical sketch, created a tri-fold display and culminated the unit with two student assemblies and one parent and family evening event. \r\n\r\nThis historical unit allowed the students to practice their research skills, develop their writing and word processing skills, launch their artistic design skills and lastly, strengthen their public speaking skills.\r\n\r\nStudents were allowed to choose a Harlem Renaissance icon such as a musician, an artist, a writer, or an activist. After researching, students shared using a 'Who Am I?\" presentation. They felt connected to the era and were impressed with the professional jazz trio who performed tunes from the era. This performance-based learning project allowed the students to share what they learned with pride. For our daily usage, having everything from pencils to pencil sharpeners, heavy duty stapler to printer paper and the electric three-hole punch is a plus. \r\n\r\nUpon receiving our classroom donation, my students could see the benefit of having a well-stocked classroom especially, being able to use the electric pencil sharpener. They were pleased to receive the donation which makes their classroom well-equipped.\r\n\r\nAs we finish the year in the next six weeks, our classroom is stocked and will be a good foundation for their 8th grade African American Literature class. next year.
