Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our elementary school does an excellent job providing an education and opportunity for students who live in a lower socioeconomic demographic. At our elementary school, a majority of the students are second language learners. Their primary language is Spanish. Our elementary school gives these students the opportunity to obtain an education. In most families, these students are the first generation to go to school. Around 90% of the students at our elementary school receive free or reduced lunch.
My Project
At our elementary school, we are building a self-sustainable garden. In order to accomplish this goal, we have started to build a full functioning compost bin. We have two compost bins that are the foundation for the self-sustainable garden. In order to encourage student participation, each grade will be responsible for a different part of the garden. They will be asked to complete tasks such as planting seeds, watering the plants, maintaining the compost bin, and clearing the weeds. The sixth graders will primarily be working in the garden. The garden provides the students the opportunity to engage with the curriculum in more hands-on manner. The students will be able to apply their learnings to the garden (i.e. life cycle of plants, seasons, insects). In order for the self-sustaining garden to be successful and a positive experience for the students, adequate funding is needed to kick-start this garden project. Supplies such as soil, worms, seeds, young plants, insects, gardening tools, and a hose, are all needed for the garden to flourish.
