I am a first-year mathematics teacher teaching Algebra I and Discrete Mathematics. My students range from those who once detested math to those who adore the problem-solving process. Overall, my students are bursting with personality and are eager, enthusiastic learners. Although math has not been their favorite subject in the past, they are learning to appreciate the beauty of mathematics and strive to understand it more fruitfully.
Problem-solving and conceptual understanding are what I believe to be most important in the classroom in order to combat students' misunderstandings of what true mathematics is really about.
My hope is for students to see mathematics as a creative subject and guide them into becoming critical thinkers.
My Project
With COVID cases on the rise, I have many students staying at home and missing out on key, vital instruction. It's crucial for my younger students to learn the foundations of high-school mathematics and for my older students to have abstract concepts be explained thoroughly in a digestible manner. To combat the disparity in access to instruction, I have begun creating video lessons for my students to watch, but it is quite difficult to complete efficiently with the current computer I have. Having this new computer will allow me to create videos in a faster manner with a lot fewer possibilities for file corruption and the storage in the computer will help immensely. I have received a lot of positive feedback from my students regarding my videos, but I would like to be able to do more and give them the best that I have to offer.
My students will be able to access interactive videos that I create and will hopefully get through these difficult times with quality, engaging lessons that will be accessible to them at any time!
Students can learn the material in a safe space and at a time of their choosing, potentially maximizing what they are able to retain. Asides from making videos, I would like to use this computer to create fun discovery-based lessons for my students to develop a liking if not love for mathematics.
