Seeing Is Believing

My students need a digital microscope to investigate and examine the unseen microscopic world around (and in) them.

A friend recently asked me to describe my first year teaching at a tough urban school. "Hungry" was my response. My students are hungry for many things missing from their lives. They are hungry for food, of course, as are most of our students who come from poverty. They are starving for attention and positive role models. They hunger for affection and stability. And despite all of the obstacles they face in life, they ask the questions of a typical 10-year-old. "Are spaceships real?" "Why is the sun so warm?" "Why can't chickens fly?" These students want to know how the world works. They are hungry for knowledge.

One problem is that time and time again I have to face is the battle against pseudo-science. Television offers a full menu of programs that present "the truth" about everything from alien abductions to Bigfoot. These programs are well produced, using so-called experts, and can sometimes provide compelling arguments my students don't have the knowledge to refute. Since I have no power to control what they watch at home, it is clear to me that I have to do a better job teaching science at school to give these children a foundation on which to judge fact from fiction.

I am currently developing the science curriculum for my students and it is clear to me our school lacks certain pieces of equipment vital to an effective and challenging science education. The standards mandated by our school corporation require us to study soil composition, plant cells, animal cells, and ecosystems. All of these topics would be enhanced if we had a quality digital microscope. A digital microscope, along with a PC and projector, can allow an entire class of students to examine the same slide simultaneously. The teacher can point out specific microscopic details to young students and know with certainty that all students are seeing the same image. I have asked my school for this piece of equipment but have been told the funds are just not available.

Language arts and math are getting most of the focus in schools today. I believe science is just as important because it asks students to use skills developed in math and language arts, but also requires students to develop skills in logic and reason. I humbly ask that you help my students experience a quality science education. Please support this request for a digital microscope.
