My Project

Most of us grew up learning from a standard Mercator projection map, which is what is used in almost every classroom around the world. Most people don't realize that the Mercator projection significantly distorts the size of continents, making northern regions appear much larger than they are, and shrinking the Global South. It makes it seem like the United States and Africa seem are comparable in size, while in reality Africa can fit the U.S., Middle East, Europe, and China within its landmass.

By bringing a Gall-Peters Projection map into our room, I want to give my students a more accurate understanding of the world around us.

This is important for geography and accuracy but also for justice and equity; when students spend years looking at a map that shrinks Africa, South America, and Asia, it shapes how they perceive the world.

In our classroom, we utilize the world map and continents maps as a point of reference daily as we learn about different regions of the world. We annotate our shared map throughout the year. By providing these maps, you are giving them the tools to see the world more fairly and helping them build a foundation of understanding that will last a lifetime.
