My Project

Climate change in the world is an ever increasing problem. I believe part of our job as educators is to help students understand and experience some of the possible innovations now coming to fruition in the world that will help combat the effects of climate change and with respect to renewable resources. The indoor hydroponic garden I am requesting is entirely school & student safe. This hydroponic garden can grow salad greens, herbs, and some fruits and vegetables year round. It is compact and will fit on counter space, making it very accessible and sustainable for a library space like mine. Caring for this garden will be the combined job of interested students, library student aides, and students from the Environmental Science, Animal Management & Wildlife classes.

However, the biggest benefit of this project is that every single student in the school will be exposed to this idea of sustainable farming each and every time they come to the library.

Imagine the hundreds of organic conversations I will have with students as they see the hydroponic garden and are curious about what it is. I really think having the garden here in the library will impact hundreds of student lives, perceptions, and perhaps their future decisions if they carry this positive experience forward.
