My Project

I am a special education teacher for students in grades 9-12. My students have a wide range of learning difficulties, but they all deserve the opportunity to succeed!

Most of my students struggle to get their basic needs met.

Many depend on what they receive from school as their main source of food. We have established a snack pantry in our resource room to supplement the food provided by the cafeteria. While we encourage our students to volunteer at our community monthly food pantry, the reality is that most of them experience food insecurity themselves. Generational poverty is common among my students. Some students are living in cars, homeless shelters, or doubling up with other families. Sometimes large families are split up. There are students living away from their parents due to abuse and neglect. Often, students tell us that they aren’t able to go to the fridge or cupboard when they feel hungry.

This project will allow my students to fill up the snack pantry. Students will be able to come to the Resource Room to get a snack or drink from the pantry when needed during the school day. A small bite to eat goes a long way in getting them to engage in school when life around them is hard and they are hungry.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
