Second Grade Science really does "Matter!"
I am a general education second grade teacher in a Title 1 school. The majority of the students in my class come from high poverty homes and half of my students are English Language Learners. Our school was recently put into School Improvement for not meeting the required test scores on our state achievement tests. It is very important to me that I give my students a strong foundation to be successful in the future.
Our school has very limited supplies for teaching Science. There are no textbooks, and only one chart that the teacher uses. We have been supplied with one tub of materials for experiments but after a few years of use many of the supplies have run out. It is very important for our student to have lots of science exposure since they will take a standardized test in 5th grade.
I have asked for books which will help give us a basis for discussion and exposure to vocabulary. The hands on materials will give us a chance to do some science experiments which always help make learning complete. The games are yet another way to have fun with science and review our learning.
Your help with this project will make it possible for my students to have fun while at the same time learn valuable science information. It is important now more than ever for our my students to have a deep love and understanding in the field of science and with your help we can make that happen!
