Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My Pre-K students attend a Title I school where many of them are just beginning their educational journey. For some, school is their first exposure to books, structured storytelling, and early literacy experiences. These early years are critical in building vocabulary, listening comprehension, and a lifelong love of reading.

I want to create a cozy, screen-free listening center in our classroom using a Toniebox audio system and headphones.

The Toniebox is a child-friendly audio player that allows students to independently listen to stories by placing a character figure on top of the box. It is hands-on, durable, and developmentally appropriate for preschool learners.

In a world filled with screens, my students deserve opportunities to build imagination and listening skills without visual over-stimulation. A listening center will:

• Strengthen early literacy and vocabulary development

• Improve listening comprehension and attention span

• Support English language learners through repeated story exposure

• Encourage independence and confidence

• Foster imagination and a love of storytelling

Many of my students do not have access to books or educational audio materials at home. This listening center will provide equitable access to rich language experiences in a way that is engaging and developmentally appropriate.

Students will be able to use the Toniebox during literacy centers, quiet time, and independent exploration. They will learn how to care for materials, take turns, and engage with stories in a meaningful way. Over time, this center will help build foundational skills that prepare them for reading success in kindergarten and beyond.
