Science with a Projection Device

My students need a projector. This will help transform an elementary classroom into a high school science lab.

My Students

Our high school science program is being run in a primary classroom that was built in 1957. We need a complete overhaul, our project is just a start in being able to deliver quality instruction to our students.

Our school is part of Chico Unified SD's Alternative Education program (FVHS used to be categorized as a "continuation" school).

The students are identified as "at-risk" students. Many come to us behind in credits and some are parents (or soon to be parents). The majority of our students come from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. I'm still surprised when a student announces that he/she is the first in their family to graduate from high school. Our student body consists of students with diagnosed and undiagnosed learning issues. Students having low test scores are a result of a very disjointed education due to attendance issues throughout their schooling career. I find this group a special population to work with. I have taught at this school since the mid-1990's and it has been one of the most rewarding professional decisions I've ever made.

My Project

Our alternative students are held to the same academic standards as the students at the comprehensive high schools. However, we are handicapped with a severe lack of resources. An elementary school classroom really can't compete with traditional high schools (many of whom are limited in their own right). The projection device requested can interface with DVD players, computers, document scanners, cameras, etc. This will dramatically help students view content and hands-on activities with much clarity and interaction. I will be able to use on-line science resources via computer, DVDs, and close-ups of demonstrations with use of a document scanner (microscope activities, detailed instructions on projects, color pictures, diagrams, and objects). Currently, I have to rely heavily on photocopied worksheets. This will bring my instruction to a new level.

Consider how you would react if you were a student or teacher in today's society with countertops made for kindergarteners, and trying to use three electrical outlets.

Without this, I am still stuck using teaching methods and technologies used in the 1950's and 1960's. But now, typewriters, overhead projectors, and mimeograph machines (soon the TV) have become extinct as teacher resources.
