Help us "rock out" with science education that generates an interest in how rocks and minerals influence our everyday lived experiences. My fourth grade students will learn that mining natural resources makes it so we can continue to enjoy modern inventions and we should protect those resources.
My fourth grade students come from a low to mid socioeconomic status in a small suburban community.
They are highly motivated to learn about their community and the resources that create the jobs here. Our school runs on a year-round schedule and houses about 900 students from K-6th.
My Project
My students will be able to have hands-on, literacy, and engaging experiences with rock science instruction. When they have a variety of activities to learn and review from, my students are more motivated in their desire to understand the concepts. Many of the materials allow students to interact and learn from each other. The students will come to know that natural resources are limited and they have a responsibility to use these resources wisely.
The natural curiosity of students engaging with rocks can easily develop into an understanding the categorization of rocks and their embedded minerals that are available for use in so much of our school and home tools and technology.
Students can develop an understanding of how minerals can be mined and utilized in the future that creates a less disruption to the environment and preserved for future generations.
