Science Notebooks for Young Scientists!

My students need composition books and journals to use as Science Notebooks.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

For the first time in my school's history, we have a full-time science teacher- me. For the first time in the school's history, all students are receiving high-quality, hands-on science instruction. Now, we just need to turn the classroom into a "lab."

I work at an urban, public school that serves a low-income population.

The resources of our school and community are limited, but our dreams are big. Each week, I see all of the school's students-almost 300 young scholars-in my "Science Lab." We have future marine biologists, geologists, ecologists, chemists, astronomers, and archaeologists in our midst. I even have a student who has dreams of becoming an ornithologist. Everyday, I have students who spend their free time in the lab. Just today, I had a group of 5th graders come in during morning recess to help me prep for today's second grade lesson on balance; 4th graders came in during lunch to clean the crayfish tanks and check on the crayfish that laid eggs last week; and after-school, a different group of 5th graders stayed in the lab to conduct an experiment with citric acid and baking soda. So, we have no shortage of ideas or enthusiasm - just resources.

My Project

What I'm requesting are essential classroom materials-composition books. We will use these composition books every day as Science Notebooks--an essential part of the FOSS curriculum. In these books, students record their learning and observations daily. They keep a glossary of important words, practice drawing diagrams, and learn to create tables to record data. I'm asking for enough to last the school year, and for notebooks with different kinds of filler paper for the different age levels, (from college-ruled paper for the fifth graders to pages with picture boxes at the top and writing lines with dashes down the middle for the first graders).

Sadly, in this era of budget cuts, these are seen as "extras." In more affluent areas, teachers send home a list of school supplies for parents to purchase.

In my community, this isn't an option. So, I'm asking for your help in supplying my students with basic materials they need for Science class, materials that the families can't supply and the State won't. Please help use get the basic supplies we need to give the students the rich, rigorous, academic experience in Science they deserve!
