My Students

My school is an exceptional place. In my opinion, these students are the greatest students in the world. The challenges that these students have to overcome every day inspire me to do more.

The children I have the opportunity to teach have some of the hardest home lives anyone could ever think existed.

The school I work at is a Title 1 school. It is extremely diverse and extremely economically disadvantaged. Approximately 95% of the students qualify for Free or Reduced-Price Lunch. Around 50% of the students are Latinx, 25% Caucasian, 15% African American, and the rest is comprised of Asian, multiracial, and Native American. Many of these students are also English Language Learners. Simply put, they are a high-risk group of students. I want these students to have the same resources that many students from more affluent backgrounds have access to.

My Project

The goal of this project is to create a science library for my students. My students come from low-income homes and often don't have an opportunity to engage with interesting books covering scientific topics. Many of these students rarely engage with books at home at all.

I hope to encourage young people to become scientists by allowing them to see how the many things they are learning about in class can influence the world.

Many of the people, topics, and events that the books I have chosen influence these students' lives in a variety of ways. I hope some of these texts can inspire students to learn more about science and hopefully give them the love that I have for the subject.
